Every hero story has a question at its center. In The Space Between, that question is a person: Dr. Barrillo.
A scientist and a father
Dr. Barrillo is the father of the twins, Protan and Neutrina. He is a scientist. He is also the reason their world turned upside down.
The project
Dr. Barrillo worked on a military super-soldier project. Then he disappeared. To protect what mattered most, he experimented on himself, and that choice changed him completely.
The protector
He came back as something new: a huge, hulking protector who can blend into his surroundings with camouflage. He doesn't speak the way he used to. He reaches out through melody and frequency, a kind of language his kids have to learn to hear.
Becoming the space between
Dr. Barrillo becomes the space between: the bridge between who he was and who he had to become, and between a father and the children he is still trying to protect. That is where the book gets its name.
Why kids connect with him
Lots of kids know what it feels like when a parent is far away, changed, or hard to reach. Dr. Barrillo shows that love can still find a way through, even when it sounds different.
