Meet the Heroes of the Backpack Universe: Blackout, Ash, Asylum, Misty and More

Protan and Neutrina may be at the center of The Space Between, but they’re far from the only extraordinary kids in the Backpack Universe. Here’s a quick guide to the heroes, their powers and how they connect.

Blackout

Blackout can absorb the force and energy of virtually any attack directed at him. Every hit makes him stronger and bigger while draining whatever stands against him. You can’t beat Blackout by overpowering him; you can only avoid him.

Fitzgerald

Blackout’s younger brother is a 12-year-old tech genius with an extraordinarily powerful mind. He can intercept and process digital, satellite and radio signals and has advanced psychic abilities. He’s also the one person who can shut his brother’s power down.

Ash

Fifteen-year-old Ash can harness and control the unmatched heat of the sun. What was meant to destroy her instead awakened an incredible power.

Asylum

Asylum has retractable, gold-coated wings he can reshape at will, along with extraordinary strength and speed, heightened senses and an impenetrable body. He can also step into one shadow and emerge from any other.

Misty

Neutrina’s best friend since childhood, Misty has an extraordinary connection with machines. She can control virtually any machine, or any single component, as naturally as if it were part of her own body.

Twista

Twista commands the forces of the wind, turning the air around him into an extension of his will. His confrontation with the twins is one of the turning points of The Space Between.

Rhythm

Brilliant and fun-loving, Rhythm can manipulate space and time, affecting a single person or an entire crowd. To protect her identity, she ages her appearance forward so she can move through the world unrecognized.

Hailp

Hailp is an alien sent to Earth in response to the extraordinary changes emerging in these young people. Hailp’s mission isn’t to control them, but to gather, guide and train them before their powers create consequences they can’t control.

Dr. Barrillo

Protan and Neutrina’s father is a brilliant scientist whose experiment on himself transformed his body and mind. Now a hulking protector, he can camouflage himself completely, and he communicates with the twins through melody and frequency.
