After Dr. Barrillo disappears while working on a military super-soldier project, the twins are left to navigate a childhood of family instability and orphanages. Their longtime nanny, Karen Rice, ultimately becomes their guardian while General Patchett quietly keeps them under surveillance, believing their father may one day return.
Behind the scenes, Dr. Liezle pushes the research further, experimenting on vulnerable children taken from the streets. Some survive—and emerge changed. Their new abilities begin creating forces that neither the military nor the children themselves fully understand.
Protan and Neutrina discover the underground training facility their father prepared for them. As their powers intensify, a confrontation with Twista forces the twins beyond anything they have experienced and reveals that their abilities are far greater than they imagined.
The battle also reveals the silent protector who has remained close to them: their father, transformed by his own failed experiment. Guided by instinct and love for his children, Dr. Barrillo becomes the space between them and the dangers their emerging powers can create.
The twins have always protected children who were lost, abandoned, or forgotten. With the discovery of their powers, that instinct becomes a mission—and the Backpack Universe begins.
